Absolutely fantastic book on my favorite 20th century jeweler, the incomparable Suzanne Belperron. I own so many beautiful jewelry books that I only glance at the photos, but I read this entire book in one night..I could not put the riveting story of her life down.Not only a magnificent artist and jeweler, but a woman of integrity. The photograph of the notes written to her by Bernard Herz brought tears to my eyes and I was happy his family was also included in the book.The jewels are mouth-watering and many I don't think I've seen before and when possible, they are shown next to her original drawing.Oh, and did I mention the amazing cover and back of the book?? Thames & Hudson always puts out a beautiful product, but the cover is fabric with a picture of a diamond double clip brooch that looks like it is rendered in 3-D, and cleverly the back shows the all important and usually never shown back so you can see the mechanism and construction of the piece. It looks like you could snatch it off the page and wear it (oh, how I wish I could!!). I really do buy almost every jewelry book that is printed, but this one will hold a very special place in my library.
Well worth the wait. The first time I heard of Suzanne Belperron was when I read a book about Jewelry of famous women. And I was just struck by how wonderfully original and great pieces of jewelry art work they were. So when I got the book, it was just one of those books you cannot put down and look and read over and over again to make sure you read and saw every detail. This book is for everyone who is interested in knowing what it is to have good taste, great workmanship, savoir faire and see what the true meaning of wearable art really means. Bravo! Finally she is recognized again and hopefully never forgotten.
FABULOUS !!!! If you are a jewelry person, this book is for you. I " discovered " Belperron's jewelry in the Duchess of Windsor's auction catalogue. I searched and searched for more info and more pictures of her designs. This book has great photos, a more extensive listing of her jewelry and lots of biographical information. I couldn't believe that her iconic Christmas tree pin was not included ???? But the ivory leaves pin and the taupe chalcedony and pearls bracelet were magnificent !!!! A great gift. I went through the book three times, looking at the photos, before I read it.
A must-have for the jewelry hound. Belperron's vision was unlike any other, and since I was unfamiliar with her work I was astounded. There are so few female jewelry designers, and now we see another type of aesthetic. Beautifully presented, nicely written. I'm so glad I pulled the trigger and bought it. Of my library of 100+ jewelry books, it's an important piece in the collection. So glad to have it. I can't imagine collecting all the articles from around the world to photograph. Belperron is beautifully organic, elegant, striking. You'll be glad to own this book.
This is one of the most beautiful jewelry books I have owned. The writing and history are fascinating as well. Suzanne Belperron was not only a gifted designer but a woman of integrity. I recommend this book without reservation.
